In her poems Rukeyser focuses on class, gender and race. She’s concerned with war and its consequences, the Jewish diaspora and American society. Rukeyser’s been described as the greatest poet of her “exact generation”, “mother of us all” and “our twentieth-century Coleridge; our Neruda”.
